Wake County Commissioners Vote to Support Marriage Amendment

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Wake County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution Monday in support of an amendment to the state constitution that would clearly define marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The resolution also encouraged voters to go to the polls on May 8th to vote for the Amendment.

Marriage is already defined in North Carolina as the union of one man and one woman, and the amendment puts this definition into the state constitution where it will be safe from being redefined by activist judges and legislators.

The amendment recognizing marriage as the union of one man and one woman goes to voters on the May 8 primary ballot. The resolution passed by the Wake County Commissioners is a sharp contrast to a vote in December by the Raleigh City Council opposing the Marriage Protection Amendment.

“We appreciate the courageous stand that the Wake County Commissioners have
taken on protecting marriage. With the recent swirl nationally of judges and legislatures re-defining marriage, it is appropriate that voters in North Carolina will get to decide this important question. The Commissioners’ support for the Marriage Amendment sends a clear signal that marriage should be defined by the people of North Carolina, not by activist judges and legislators,” said Tami Fitzgerald, chairwoman of the Executive Committee for Vote FOR Marriage NC.

Vote FOR Marriage NC is the referendum committee working to pass the Marriage Protection Amendment on May 8th. The campaign is comprised of a multitude of policy organizations, denominations, and civic groups. Its Executive Committee consists of the Christian Action League, NC Values Coalition, a coalition of African American pastors, NC Baptists, and the National Organization for Marriage (NOM).
